Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a way for companies to benefit, while also benefiting society. Although aware that CSR is not the solution to global problems, the partner of James Epstein-Reeves Forbes reels from this premise the six reasons why companies should adopt a CSR strategy.

In an article published on the blog of CSR of Forbes magazine, Epstein-Reeves explains that companies understand how CSR are those that include the following processes in the organization:

1. Innovation. In the context of CSR, innovation is a major benefit to the company and society. In a talk by Geoff McDonald, vice president of Human Resources, Marketing, Communication and Sustainability at Unilever, he stated that without CSR, research and efforts to evolve Unilever had not been the same.

2. Savings. One of the best ways to start implementing sustainability is used to cut costs: less water and less energy will mean a quick savings. For example, the food company General Mills expects to reach 20% savings in 2015. “As a food company dependent on agriculture, climate change and its possible effect on crops is a major concern. Therefore, we focused our attention on reducing energy use, the largest source of CO2. “Given the more than $ 600,000 saved in 2011 after installing a monitoring system of emissions, say on their website that” our to reduce energy costs by 20% by 2015 is attainable. ”

3. Brand differentiation. In the past, brand differentiation was one of the main reasons why companies adopted CSR. Groups like Timberland could easily incorporate the values of the company and its business model to CSR. However, today is much more common, so use it to distinguish one brand has become more complicated. A clear example is the case of Coca-Cola and Pepsi, which are very similar CSR strategies.

4. Long-term planning. CSR is an effort by the interests of the company’s long term and to ensure that their future will be sustainable. Of moving from thinking about the next quarter’s financial results to think about the impact of ten years.

5. Consumer engagement. It is essential that CSR activities are known, a premise that the company has applied Walmart. Walmart has established itself as a leader in efforts designed environments because in 2008 a campaign to warn the consumer about the products they chose to buy and how they could affect the environment. Epstein-Reeves believes that this is a business communication tool that is rarely used.

6. Employee engagement. Just as CSR actions should be known publicly, employees also need to be aware. The company Sara Lee created a Task Force for Sustainable pursuing a strategy of sustainability, and the Solo Cup Company, a network of sustainable actions to promote employment of employees in community service related to the priorities of CSR of the company. On the website of the company Sara Lee explained that “for sustainability becomes integral to business strategy, the company must determine what impact this will cause sustainability and how it will be impacted by culture, mission and model of the company “.

La Comissió Europea recolça la ISO 26000

The ISO International Standard ISO 26000 is one of the three documents being recommended by the European Commission (EC) on guidance for European enterprises to fulfil their commitment to social responsibility.

The recommendation comes in a recently published communication from the EC to governing bodies of the European Union (EU) outlining a renewed strategy for corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the EU from 2011 to 2014.

The Commission intends to monitor the commitments made by European enterprises with more than 1000 employees to take account of internationally recognized CSR principles and guidelines and of the ISO 26000 guidance standard on social responsibility in their operation.

At the same time, the Commission invites all large European enterprises to make a commitment by 2014 to take account of at least one of three sets of principles and guidelines when developing their approach to CSR: ISO 26000, the United Nations Global Compact, or the Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises developed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The motivation for boosting CSR in Europe according to the EC is that, “The economic crisis and its social consequences have to some extent damaged consumer confidence and levels of trust in business. They have focused public attention on the social and ethical performance of enterprises. By renewing efforts to promote CSR now, the Commission aims to create conditions favourable to sustainable growth, responsible business behaviour and durable employment generation in the medium and long term.”

ISO 26000 was launched on 1 November 2010 and has become one of ISO’s best known and important standards. It provides guidance on social responsibility (SR) – the SR designation underlining ISO’s intention that it should be as useful for public sector and non-governmental organizations as it is for business corporations.

According to the standard, the perception and reality of an organization’s performance on social responsibility can influence, among other things:

  • Competitive advantage
  • Reputation
  • Ability to attract and retain workers or members, customers, clients or users
  • Maintenance of employees’ morale, commitment and productivity
  • View of investors, owners, donors, sponsors and the financial community
  • Relationship with companies, governments, the media, suppliers, peers, customers and the community in which it operates.
